Now a days auto gear vehicles come with P R N D S gear system. Different manufactures giving different meaning to their gears. This article is writing to get the basic idea of gear system. If there is any doubt it is better to see your vehicle manual.
Gear P
This is stand for the “Parking” Gear. With the meaning of its name, this gear is using for park the vehicle. In this case, gear box is lock the driving wheels.
Gear R
Reverse gear, as you know this is using for reverse the vehicle. This is bit low range gear. Because reverse gear has designed for reverse the vehicle even over a mountain easily.
Gear N
Neutral Gear. This gear take off the wheels from gear box. If you disable to start the vehicle, you can change to Gear N and propel it. But sometime there are different ways to put the vehicle into neutral gear without start it. It is differ with your vehicle model.
Gear D
This is usual Driving gear. In the old vehicles there is an over drive on / off switch for this Driving gear. That’s for restrict vehicle shift to the upper gears.
Gear S
Also known as Gear (2) or snow Gear. Different companies giving different names for this gear. Normally this gear limit the gear shifting for first 2 gears. Also in some vehicles this is using as Sport gear. In that case it gives fast gear change with throttle response.
Instead of above main gears, there are few more in some vehicles
Gear L
This is the lowest gear. Also known as gear (1). Here its stop the gear change from current one to upper one.
Gear M
In Tiptronic gear box manual gear change, activate by this.
Gear B
Fully electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles have this gear. This function the brake if the vehicle moving in a ramp continuously. If your vehicle is fully electric or hybrid, when you change gear to B it is charge the battery when you going down in a ramp.
