Just filling up the gas tank can be a struggle when you live on a tight budget. Furthermore, gas prices seem to soar at the worst possible times. When the gas prices are hitting you too hard here are few ways we worked to save money on fuel during our day to day life
Things to consider making a habit of
Drive slower than the speed limit: Now days in Sri Lanka most of our trips we are used to clocked in to the freeways. That offered maximum speed limits of up to 100Kmh, but driving at that speed burns fuel at an incredible rate. We found the best fuel consumption rate was attained at traveling around 65-70Kmh. Accelerate slowly: Building speed is where you lose the most fuel, so be patient and get to your desired speed slowly. |
Make your vehicle as light as possible: Especially if you’re driving a RV or a wagon type vehicle your tank frequently carries unnecessary fuel weight. If you are traveling far, pack bicycles in the vehicle (use a bicycle carrier) and use them to travel to nearby places while on the trip. You can also enjoy your family time healthy and cost free.
Take the extra junk out of the trunk. Keep the spare tire (or the Tire Repair System) and the jack. Reduce the weight and save an extra few cents on every trip.
Make sure your car is serviced before you travel: You don’t want to find yourself buying replacement car parts or having to search for a mechanic during your trip. Get an oil change on your car according to your mileage. Check the air in your tires or you can fill N2 gas on your tires for more comfortable ride. And make sure to check the air filter before you leave home. You may even want to get an inspection on your vehicle if you feel necessary. Maintaining your car is a simple way to make sure it is running at its peak performance. Peak performance means less gas waste and a longer life for your automobile.
Plan your Drive Week: Sit down each week and figure out where you need to go. When things overlap, combine the trips. You can save a ton of fuel simply by paying attention and thinking ahead. If you plan to drive 10 Km to the nearest town to the grocery store and the mall, you can do it all in one day. Plan your route in order from nearest to farthest or vice versa and save fuel and your precious time.
Consider Car-Pooling: If you and your friends are going to the same place most of the time, find some friend to travel with, make a meeting spot and split the gas bill in half.
Avoid the heat: Drive in the cooler parts of the day to avoid losing gas to vaporization. This goes for filling up too. You can avoid the vaporization if you fill up your tanks at sundown or at night. Filling up the car instead of adding a bit of gas here and there can help you better monitor your gas spending and save you money.

Too long a checklist?
Of course it's hard to do all these at once. And some of them might seem ridiculous (Car pooling is impossible when you don't have friends). But we simply recommend to try out each and see whether it's easy to carry out and whether your wallet is better off that way.
All of these are simple tips and tricks, but if you use all the tips to save gas together, you are looking at a considerable savings year over year.
